I'm attaching a picture of my pregnant mare's vulva, which is quite swollen on one side. What would cause this?

Has she had any premature contractions and been rubbing as a result? Have you pulled apart the lips of the vulva and is so, is there any sign of inflammation? Are you positive of her breeding date? Has she had other foals? Any other unusual signs/symptoms?

No, I'm not sure about the due date. She could be due any day. She was pasture bred. She hasn't bagged up yet. I haven't seen any contractions or rubbing. I looked inside her vulva. The only redness I see is right behind the swollen area. I noticed this morning she has a very slight discharge. It's not pus but a little orangeish stuff. I haven't noticed contractions or rubbing. Her appetite seems normal. She has had one foal, two years ago. Everything was normal and she had a gorgeous, healthy filly. The only other thing I can think of is that sometimes she stands with her back legs a little out behind her as if she's uncomfortable but then she's very pregnant; still I've never noticed her do this before.

Does the area seem painful when you apply pressure etc.? Are there any other horses in with her? Could she have been kicked? I have a friend whose horse was kicked in the vulva and it was not only swollen, but also torn. Lee C

Hello PRU, Trauma is certainly the most likely cause. DrO

OK. Yes she definitely could have been kicked. She shares a pasture with another pregnant mare who has kicked her before. So I don't need to worry about anything?

Hello PRU, I don't know what to make of your statement "I don't need to worry about anything?". National debt, violence in the middle east and Africa, and all the things we don't know about your mare are possible causes of concern. Since we do not know the cause of the swelling above we cannot make a judgement like you ask. If this is simple trauma and the only consequence is the swelling above I would say there is nothing to worry about. But whether that is the actual case I don't know. DrO
