A couple of weeks ago I noticed our 30 year old TB gelding has a large bump beside his left eye. It appears to be where I think the joint of his jaw should be. It is about 3/4 of an inch high and about 1/2 in around. It is hard and appears to be solid does not move with skin or pressure. Any ideas what this might be caused by? I hope to post pictures if necessary. Because of his age I'm not willing to spend alot of money if it is not causing him any pain which it does not appear to at this point.

Nothing in particular comes to mind here Julie, perhaps a photo would help. DrO

Hard, immovable, nonpainful over the skull suggests a periosteal reaction with possible new bone formation from trauma but since there is no evidence of trauma in the pictures, I cannot rule out granuloma (inflammation) or neoplasia (cancer). Radiography and/or biopsy will be necessary to make the determination. DrO

Thanks Doc. I doubt I will go so far as a biopsy because of the age of the horse and since it doesn't seem to be painful or affecting him in any adverse way I will let nature take it's course.

Julie, Did Jim have his teeth floated on herd health day? Just wondering that if he did, could there be any correlation between that procedure and the lump above his eye . Sue

I don't think the location correlates well with a tooth related problem. DrO

I was wondering the same as it did seem to have happened since he had his teeth power floated. I was thinking not about a tooth problem but a jaw problem caused by the brace they use to open the mouth.

I believe any such problem with tm joint that would result in such a swelling would cause remarkable chewing problems. DrO

You are right it most likely would. Thanks for your thoughts. Since it doesn't seem to bother him I will leave well enough alone. He seems to be otherwise healthy and happy.
