Discussion on What's best to feed to with Poor Quality Hay?

My mine hay supplier usually provides me with a good crop of hay; alfalfa, timothy, grass mix, 30-30-30 or so.

This years crop is mostly grass: orchard, brome, some timothy and about 1/3 of what I bought (700 total) has 30% alfalfa.

It looks like 20 - 40% dead, the farmer said that last years lack of rain left dead grass in the fields and that is what the brown is. Due to rain (just enough to wet the hay, still very dry) this was baled late also. And lack of snow cover the last 2 winters killed off the alfalfa also.

Should I just give a higher protien concentrate this winter, or do I need to give alfalfa cubes or something like that?

Normally I feed Safe Choice, and I don't grain heavily, just enough to mix minerals in. Horses look great.

It should work out that I can get to the alfalfa mix by mid winter so that helps.

Looking to hear what others would do/have done in this situation.

Read the Forages/Nutrition info.

Triple Crown sells cubes of Timothy and Alfalfa combined, as well as chopped grass forages that are either Timothy OR alfalfa. I've successfully used those products when our hay supply was lacking nutrition.
