Dr. O I belong to a group, SHO, which is involved in the abuse of Walkers and other gaited horses. One of the subjects that keeps coming up is that there is no evidence that the stacks and weighted shoes causes any damage to the horse. I have heard that a University did a study on this and came up with the conclusion that they did, indeed, cause permanent damage to the mechanics of the legs. Number 1 - are you aware of such a study? And if you are, could you please point me in the right direction to find it? Also, have you, in your practice, experienced any problems related to the stacks and weighted shoes? Thanks, Cheryl

Let me start off saying Cheryl that my family rides gatied horses, mostly TWH though we have a few Pasos. Two of the five came through show barns, while the last three we bought did not. I have worked for one "nationally recognized" padded up show barn in the past but do not anymore. No I am not aware of such a study but yes you see problems that have been exstensively padded up. The horses that have been kept this way for prolonged periods develop serious heel contracture. The closed deep sulcus develops thrush extrememly esily and you have to be very diligent to keep these areas clean and dry or else lameness develops. DrO
