Discussion on Conversion of mg to IU
Author Message

Posted on Tuesday, Nov 6, 2001 - 2:59 pm:

The NRC "Nutrient Requirements of Horses" lists the vitamin E content of feeds in mg/kg. How do I convert this to IU/kg? Another book I have lists the conversion from mg to IU for various forms of vitamin E, but the NRC book does not indicate the form of vitamin E analyzed. Do I assume the form given in the NRC table is d-alpha-tocopherol?

Hello Nancy,
It will depend on the context of the reference and the source of the vitamin E. When talking about nutrient contents of feeds and the source of the vit E is from natural feed stuffs it will be all d-alpha. This is the only form found in nature. However man made vitamin E supplemented feeds will contain the dl-alpha form.

Thank you.

The items in the table were all natural feeds. My book gives the conversion for d-alpha-tocopherol as 1.49 IU/mg.

You are welcome Nancy, I have revised the article to include this and other information about the different forms of vitamin E.
