Posted on Tuesday, Feb 5, 2002 - 8:46 am: I'm a little confused after reading the vaccination articles. I have two show horses that show about once a month each. Both are in good health, and both are exercised from 4 to 6 times a week. We just got our spring shots, and I need to get in touch with the vet to see exactly what was administered. My mare reacted to one of her shots, I think the flu/rhino. She has done this every year. Problem is, I see on the article that she should get flu/rhino every 3 months, along with Potomac? I didn't realize that. Should I switch to the nasal for my mare since she reacts to the shot? Thanks! |

How often you vaccinate depends on a number of factors Alicia and these are discussed in the Equine Vaccines article. But if you still have questions about what is right for you go to the articles on Flu and PHF (links are in the general vaccination article) for a more detailed analysis of these vaccination procedures. I think they will answer your questions of which to use and why. DrO |

Posted on Friday, Feb 8, 2002 - 10:44 am: DrO,My main question is whether you see fewer reactions to the intranasal vaccine. I realize not everyone fits into every schedule. My horses show at least once a month at pretty big rated shows with horses from all over, and my trainer only vaccinates once a year for some and twice for others. She does only require once a year flu/rhino. Also, we are less than 5 miles from the Potomac river, and have a pretty bad mosquito problem, so I was thinking of upping the number of Potomac shots too. I had not realized that the flu/rhino and Potomac gave such short lived protection in circumstances like ours. Anyway, I really just wanted to know if you think the nasal vaccine would be easier on my mare, who always reacts to the shot (this time she was off for three days). Alicia |

Yes, if your horse gets sore from the flu injections and not some other shot the intranasal will not make your horse sore. DrO |
