I'm curious,

A friend has heard that feeding grain, in particular corn, over many years will wear out the adrenal glands and the thyroid. The premise for this is that corn is the same as sugar and causes in essence a sugar high. When the blood sugar DrOps the horse's body reacts as if it were starving and uses these glands to try and drive the blood sugar back up; thus wearing them out.

There is a web page that explains this more fully, but doesn't include any clinical evidence. In fact it appears to be mostly an advertisement, that is why I'm skeptical. Here is the URL:

Is there any basis for this or is it hogwash? Thanks,

Alden

The fellow seems to have confused diabetes, pituitary adenomas, hypothyroidism and primary hypoadrenocorticsm. Much of this is covered in the section Diseases: Endocrine. The real problem with too much corn is obesity not worn out adrenals (hypoadrenocorticism) and thyroids (hypothyroidism) which are both characterized by weight loss. I can not think of any scientific basis for this theory.
