Discussion on How do you know older trailer is safe?

Last spring I bought a 1989 steel stock trailer. This is my first experience with trailers and I've learned a lot from this forum about towing this past year.

Last year, I felt since the trailer had recently been inspected, that that meant it was safe. Do I have it re-inspected every year in PA? If so, where? Are there places that specialize in inspecting horse trailers? The two things I'm most concerned about are the floor and tires. How do I know if the wood and steel beams under the trailer are strong? The steel under the trailer looks pretty rusty, but it could be just surface rust. My tires have a lot of tread, but look like they might be dry rotting.

Certainly best is to have someone familiar with trailers to inspect it. I think a flashlight, hammer, and a strong pick are good tools to evaluate such things. Careful inspection along with whanging and picking usually will find weak spots if there are any. When you hit it and pick at it does it sound and feel solid. When in doubt you replace it.
