Discussion on How long can I safely store grain?
Author Message

Whenever we go to the feed store to get grain, my husband wants to buy a lot to last a while and I want to get less, because I am afraid it will 'spoil' before we get through it all. (We get COB with added molasses, and I think it has a little added oil).

How long will grain safely last, assuming it is fresh when purchased, and is stored in a cool, dry place, safe from rodents and bugs?

Cool, dry place, safe from rodents or bugs, grain should be able to store for many months without problems but I have to admit it does not sound like any barn I know of.

Our feed room is an enclosed insulated room in the barn. Stays cool all summer and we keep it slightly heated in winter. It is protected by our very competent barn cat, who has access to the room via a kitty door at all times. We store the grain in plastic trash cans. Never seen a rodent in the room or bugs in the grain. Actually, the cat is so good, we have never seen a live rodent in the barn since we had him.
