Discussion on Nutrition: amino acid | |
Author | Message |
Posted on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 3:29 am: Dear Dr.O,My vet suggested to me I could add to my horse daily feed 1 egg yolk instead of using "artificial" integrator, since it contains the same essential amino acids. What do you think about it? Is there any contra indication to this? Thank you very much in advance for your reply. Best regards Isabella (Italy) |

Posted on Friday, May 24, 2002 - 7:44 am: Thank you very much for your quick reply. The integrator I was suggested to give to my horse (8years old mare in quite a good shape) supplies the same amino acid we can find in eggs. This is why my vet told me I could spare money by giving her 1 egg yolk a day with the same results. We are preparing for some dressage and jumping event (low level) and she works every days for about one hour (flat work). With the hot season she usually has lower performances and I wonder if I can add something to her diet to help her mitigate the effects of the heat. Actually I do not know if adding protein to her diet is the right solution and I also would like to now if there is any digestive problem with eggs for horses. My horse diet is about 1,5 Kg 0ats; 3 Kg of a concentrate (10/12% protein) plus about 6-7 Kg hay (I guess the quality is not very hifh here in Italy). She weights about 600 Kg. Regards Isabella P.S. I apologize for my English, I guess you can have some problem in understading what I'm trying to say. |

Posted on Sunday, May 26, 2002 - 12:09 pm: Hello Isabella,I don't believe a egg yolk added to the diet is likely to mitigate the effects of a hot season In fact just the opposite. For more on protein and performance see Care for Horses: Nutrition: Performance Nutrition. Nor is it likely to be an effective protein supplement, do to the small amount of volume. We have information on riding in the heat at, Care for Horses: Disease Prevention and Health Care: Summertime, Caring for Your Horse in the Heat. It should help you. DrO |
