My mare has not been vaccinated for four years due to the fact that she has had severe reactions. She is due to foal at any time. Now I am worried about the safety of the foal. All other hoses on our place are vaccinated. What would you recommend for the foal and for the mare?

The only difference between your foal and our regular foal vaccination schedule is that I would add a tetanus and E & WEE at birth to be boostered in 21 days. Not knowing th enature of the reactions of the mare I am not sure what would be best for her. DrO

Dear Dr. O., She is an Arabian Mare that has been showing all her life in 4-H with my daughter. She is 16 yrs. old and was A.I'd by Roger Reese of South Valley Vet clinic. He suggested not vaccinating her since she gets really ill. Neck swells and she can't move it, has trouble walking due to sore joints and gets a real runny nose and just wiped out. This goes on for two to three days and we are just worried that it could get worse if we continue to vaccinate her. Dr. Reese suggested if we vaccinated her that we may use intravenous bute before the immunizations. We figure that It's a little late for that. You indicate that we can immunize the foal at birth and then in 21 days. If that is safe then that is what we will do! Please give me your opinion on this matter. It would be greatly appreciated! Sincerely, Wendy

Yes these vaccines are frequently given to newborns without adverse effects. We know maternal immunity does not inactivate the tetanus vaccine but the encephalitis status is uncertain but worth a try. DrO
