I have a 8 month old as of November 9 - We are looking to castrate H'onu around his first birthday or shortly after - I live in Fresno, CA where the summers are very hot and the flies begin around march - april - when is the best time and sign to castrate him?}}

Forget the "signs" and use common sence. An aquaintance of mine went by the signs and almost lost her horse due to bleeding and later infection because she did it during the hottest time of summer. Fall and spring when the flys are low and the heat isn't a factor. Winter may be ok but if it is to cold it is just an added stress factor.

Richard check out the farmers almanac. They give signs for castration of animals. But, follow Kats advice. Go by season and weather conditions. Colleen

As a follow up, we gelded V-Rod last November around Thanksgiving. Although it wasn't under "the sign", there was minimal bleeding and swelling. I think a lot of it has to do with the skill of the vet. Although he was a sweet stallion, he still managed to break my nose and inflict other minor injuries. A good stallion makes a great gelding... Thats funny I grew up on a horse stud and never heard of anything like that. They were gelded in nice weather and when they were old enough. Other than that I dont know what to say.

There is actually and entire calendar every month in the Thoroughbred times that tells when the best times for birth, castration, knee problems, leg problems, weaning, fencing, everything! All set to specific times under certain signs. Mostly, it seems to be "old wives tales" but many believe and run their entire operation by them. You will find that many of the "Old Timers" and farm country people believe strongly in the Signs. Most of the "transplants" (People who were raised in the city and moved later to the country) don't know anything about them. Dr. O is right though, in all the areas and arenas I have been in and around, common sense seems to work just as well.

My husband and his family have been farmers in Northeast Texas for over 100 years. They use common sense and "the signs" when castrating and dehorning cattle and planting seeds. Hubby swears there is better healing and less blood if the cutting is done in the right moon sign. And seeds germinate better. I asked my equine vet about castrating by “the signs” and he says the same as Dr. O.... no difference. Although I have an excellent vet, I had my colt cut during a dry, cool, insect free time of year and during the right “signs”. What’s the harm? It covers all the bases! According to the almanac, the best days to castrate in December are on the 25 or the 26. Here’s a link: https://www.almanac.com/edpicks/astrological.php .
