Posted on Saturday, Feb 1, 2003 - 4:46 pm: I have two mares in foal and both are on Strongid pellets. I have heard that after they foal, they should be paste dewormed. What this still apply since they are on Strongid pellets? |

Posted on Sunday, Feb 2, 2003 - 9:49 am: Thanks. It is my understanding that I should paste with Ivermectin at day 320 of pregnancy and again after 12 hours of foaling. Should the mares also have a tetnus shot with all other boosters at 300 days? |

Posted on Thursday, May 15, 2003 - 6:42 pm: Well just to add to the confusion;my mare has been on strongid daily during her entire pregnancy and has had regular pastings as well. 30 days prior to her foaling date she was pasted, and 12 hours after she was pasted. i had fecals done on both the mare and foal as the foal STILL has some diarhea at 7 weeks of age. the baby had round worms and the mare had rounds, strongyles and strongyloides westerii. we pasted both with ivermectin and i had fecals done again a week later. the baby is clear and the mare is still showing positive with strongyloids. the baby still has some diarrhea. i have been told that i have to wait to paste the mare again and the baby will obviously have to suffer through the diarrhea. I had my two other horses fecaled as well as I was concerned that they may have worms too. they are on the same pasture as my mare was until she delivered and have the same strongid/worming routing. they were both negative for all. HELP. I'm confused. When can I worm my mare again and what should I use to get rid of these strongyloids once and for all? thanks all! |

Posted on Friday, May 16, 2003 - 8:22 am: Your post suggests one of the following conditions:
There is no reason to wait to deworm with ivermectin again, this product is safe at a 10 times overdosage even when all given at one time. But before you give it again, go out and buy a different ivermectin product. Also go and study the article "Overview of Deworming". In the article look under the "General Considerations" heading and there you will find some specific information on how to paste deworm. Follow ALL of those recommendations. YOu should also check your overall mamagement to control parasites, this is also covered in the article. If this problem persists...You might consider having fecals run at a different lab just to double check. If you find the problem you were having or the problem still persists let us know. There are reports of resistance to daily pyrantel (Strongid) administration, but currently there have not been any reports of ivermectin resistant equine strongyles anywhere, so this problem seems unlikely. Posted on Saturday, May 17, 2003 - 11:56 pm: Dr. O,I read the article and have been worming correctly so I had the test done at another lab. It came back negative for the mare and the foal. My NEW vet advised me to give my foal pro bios for the next week and then he will do a culture if the diarrhea does not improve. I can't wait until this is over! Thanks for the advise. |
