I wish I could claim this idea but a friend showed me. Just take a handful of sand (or hay, whatever) and sprinkle it on your tailgate in line with the hitchball (right down the center of the tailgate). My tailgate has grooves that match up. It's easy to see the sand from the drivers seat. I was successful (with no redos) the first time I tried to back up to the trailer (my husband called me a smart a**). You still need to get out and check to see if you are over the ball, however.

What I do is lightly duct-tape a tall stick on the near (close to driver) side of the ball and one on the trailer couple(?)...line them up and as the truck-ball stick bends I know I have it lined up. This works well for bumper-pull and goose-neck. I don't know that I was very clear...I love the idea of the sand too. There are all sorts of gizmo's that you can buy off different sites on the internet. This is just easy as I always have a roll of duct tape in the truck, and sticks either in the truck, or nature is happy to provide one close by.

I bought a magnetic flag on a stick thing that sits on the ball and when it knocks off, you are right over the ball. But I love the idea of a marker to get you pulling in straight, Martha. I may stick a piece of duct tape at the correct groove as a guide. Thanks for the tip!

Erika where did you get that flag...I've looked in the 'net and can't seem to find what you are referring to...it sounds so much easier than the duct tape thing.

Ericka...does this magnetic stick thing come from bumper pull? I too would like to get one.

Check this out. https://www.hitchingguides.com/ https://www.trailer-hitch.com/ https://www.campingworld.com/browse/skus/index.cfm?skunum=28563 Just Google or Froogle "trailer hitch align", there are many out there. I use the third brakelight on the back of my vehicle as a guide and align it with the center of my trailer. The next time you're hitched up, just make a note of what aligns with what. Chris

The third link that Chris supplied looks most similar to what I've got. I'm sorry but I can't remember where I ordered mine--probably Jeffers or one of the discount livestock suppliers.
