Are too many pears as bad as too many apples? There's a pear tree in my mare & foal's pasture and I see them occasionally munching on the fallen fruit. Should I be getting rid of these? Or are they okay for my horses to eat at will? The mare in particular seems to love them. ~Sharon

Good question, Sharon. We have persimmon trees in our pasture and the horses eat them. Makes me pucker to watch!

Yes pears and apples and too a less extent persimmons all have the potential to overload a horses system with sugar. Usually in a pasture situation horses adapt slowly to these hazards and so you get away with it. But there is a potential for gassy colic, diarrhea, and choke. DrO
