When horses are turned out on wet muddy ground for the winter, prevent mud fever but covering susceptible parts of the body, e.g lower legs, with sunflower oil - this prevents water reaching the skin, and also makes it a lot easier to hose legs off when the horse is brought in over night. NB. oil should be re-applied every couple of days and legs should be washed and dried thoroughly before hand.
