Dr. O How much Lysine would I feed to go with 1 lbs linseed meal a day? I feed excellent grass hay, a 2 to 1 (CA-Phos) mineral supplelemt, and vitamins. The linseed is for growing better feet to ride barefoot, as the grass hay is not high. I mix soybean meal, linseed meal, and rice bran together, and add 1-2 lbs a day in their feed. I do not know if the rice bran or soymeal are complete in their lysine. I add this top dress to adults, foals, and a broodmare, all barefoot. Would you recommend a better protein/fat supplement in their diet?

Run a search on flax and lysine we have discussed the amount to supplement before. Is there a reason why you think your horses diet is protein deficient? I like alfalfa for protein, it provides more of other important nutrients (like vitamins) not in soybean or flax. Vegtable oil for fat, it usually is stablalized so rancidity is not a problem and more reasonably priced per gram of oil.

Thanks Dr. O- I did a seach, and found your answers. I don't like alfalfa for myself to be around as I have mold allergies. I also checked out at one time all the discussions on your companion farrier site, and # 1 on many farrier's inquiry was amount of (lack of ) protein fed on an all grass hay diet. I feed 1 lb lynseed meal/soybeal meal/rice bran mix, and a 2 to 1 Ca/phos mineral supplement (for grass hay diet) vitamins, on top of a handfull of grain so it sticks together. The" meal mix" allows me to raise the protein, energy, and fat slightly, without alfalfa or much grain, which I don't need to maintain excellent condition. I have tried oils, and like the effect, but the ants find the oil anywhere and get into anything with oil. I have gone the barefoot route like you (posted elsewhere), and having good horn growth seemed crucial for the program of riding barefoot, which by the way is the best thing I have ever done in terms of their soundness and gaits under saddle.
