Besure you press the link to the article on WNV where there is a lot more on vaccination. Though not approved for pregnant mares there have been no adverse reactions and thought to be safe. The important question unanswered yet is when are foals of vaccinated mares best vaccinated. The concern is the passive immunity from the mare will inactivate the vaccine. If no more information is developed, we well recommend vaccination to begin at 6 months. DrO |

Theoretically then the foal is also protected during the remainder of the season. We should have specific information this year on when to vaccinate the foal.DrO |

Posted on Tuesday, Dec 23, 2003 - 2:23 pm: Dr O I have a mare who is almost 6 months in foaland she has a history of reactions to vaccines. I have a dilemma over west nile. She has never had WN vaccine. Her vaccine reactions to date include swelling at the site, so sore she needs bute, takes baby steps, once her legs swelled from a flu/rhino. I have pre medicated her but during pregnancy I try not to. Anyway, during her last pregnancy she had her 3 pneumoborts but got progressively worse. This is her second pregnancy and during the 5th month we gave her Pneumobort. She ran a fever of 102, she was on bute for 3 days. Could barely walk. This was the worse reaction. She is dramatic but the vets suggest no more Pneumobort. I live in So Calif and we had our first case of West Nile abount 2 months ago. In general our vets are saying vaccinate now and pregnant mares after 6 months and/or in the 10th month. I am trying to weigh the incidence of the disease and also considering this mares tendency to be especially sensitive. She is due end of May and we could be just starting into the mosquito season then. The breeding farm I use has vaccinated pregnant mares with WN and will continue to do so, but they had an unusually high incidence of stillborn foals in 2003. ( 10% on mares who have no history of this) necropsies were inconclusive. Would you wait till she foals? We have only had 2 cases but they say 2004 will be worse. I know this puts the baby with no immunity, I was wondering about the possibility of covering the baby at birth with an oral Igg or ? any thoughts would be appreciated. Thanks, Debbie |
