Posted on Tuesday, Mar 13, 2007 - 9:02 pm: Hello everyone! Had the farrier at the barn today. He has the most state of the art equipment and when I was asking about specific anatomy he told me about a program called The Glass Horse which is an interactive CD-ROM on hoof and leg anatomy. So he whipped out his computer and loaded it up. It's so awesome, the tutorial is spoken, and the images of the hoof, tendons and nerves etc are all in three dimension and with a click of the mouse you can rotate them and layer them. I wish I had more time to use the program but for only $60-80 dollars I am going to buy one of my own. He forgot where he got it but recommended I just google. Check it out it was so cool.Another program he had but was a little pricer at $4000 called One Track allows you to video the horse's gait and then you can slow the images to your liking, zoom in and out rotate etc. It even allows you to take a picture of the hoof and load up an X-Ray of that same hoof and then transpose the x-ray on the picture so the horse can be trimmed and balanced according to the diagnosis. I am so not bringing this product justice but I was able to see a foundered hoof of an actual horse with his x-ray transposed on top of it so you could see where his bones were rotated. It was amazing! Computers are wonderful things aren't they? |

That is one AMAZING farrier.I found the site at: www.3DGlassHorse.com Apparently, there is only a Gastrointestinal one and a Distal Limb one? SOO interesting and helpful in learning more about what goes on where our eyes can't see. Thanks, again. |

Posted on Wednesday, Mar 14, 2007 - 6:33 am: Yes these are the two available Holly and they are amazing. They come out of a project by a large animal professor I had at Ga, James Moore, and a University of Georgia computer sim lab. The GI version has been out for awhile but the distal limb is new. For anyone who wants to better understand gi anatomy and colic or the lower leg and lameness these are valuable tools. I use both as references when writing articles.Corinne I have not tried the one track system but it does sound interesting. DrO |

Posted on Wednesday, Mar 14, 2007 - 10:26 am: Dr O I thought of you when I saw the one track especially after the post the other day of that horse with the floppy gait (?) It was really amazing. He pulled up a horse with such a severe hock soreness that when watching from behind you could see the off hind literally step near the footfall of the near hind. Of course I couldn't see it until it put it in super slow mode and then rotated the angles. He was also able to stop the screen and use the mouse to measure angles etc so he could do the best farrier work for this animal. He is the farrier from Oakridge an equine hospital in Edmond OK and while pricey he is the best. He knows so much about leg anatomy I was surprised he was not a vet. I can give you his contact information if you wanted to ask him any questions about it as he already said if you wanted any information on the the product he would love to tell you about it, because of course I had said I thought you would love this product. Just let me know and I will send his contact info.Anyway, Holly, yes I do have to admit I have never seen a farrier come with a full up truck where he could fire shoes, had computer hook ups and educated his clients with interactive CD ROMS. Demetrius loves him. He is 2.5 times the amount I normally pay and comes every 5-6 weeks but I wouldn't have it any other way. Since he is at an Equine teaching hospital he has the very best in education all the time. And is a very very esteemed diagnostician because he works with the vets. And those products are for the every day horseman (with the exception of the one track) and all are under $80. The computer just guides you with the click of a mouse. You don't even have to read as it's narrated. LOL |

Posted on Wednesday, Mar 14, 2007 - 11:21 pm: Hmmm . . . this Oakridge farrier might be "just the ticket" in helping to figure out the hind toe-dragging of one of our horses. Our vet here said that his toe dragging isn't normal (which is what I told the trainer at the farm where I went to pick him up, but the trainer said he was just a lazy horse) and said that if it is a back issue, we'd have to go down to OSU to have him x-rayed by their big machine. He said it could be from an old injury that happened when the colt was younger and that the toe dragging may just be out of habit at this point. Mark's surgery is putting any trips for horse x-rays on hold, but do you know if your farrier would come 15 miles over the KS/OK border to help try to figure out our little gelding? |

Posted on Thursday, Mar 15, 2007 - 9:40 am: Holly. Yes this might be a great diagnostic tool. You can contact Oakridge and ask for John Muldoon and see if he will travel. I know he is flown all over the country to work on Million dollar horses so I think it's possible although I don't ask too many questions as I am just happy we have him. We used to trailer to him at another farm but Kim was able to procure him after Christmas. If for some reason you can't get to Oakridge you are always welcome to come to our barn just down 70, literally one turn and highway away from Briar Fox. He is there every five weeks and can at least do the gait analysis. Just to warn you however If you use him remember you will be hooked and you will PAY for his services. Don't know what shoe sets cost but my trims are $45.You can call Oakridge and speak to him. Kim has his phone number if you can't reach him there. |

Posted on Thursday, Mar 15, 2007 - 7:17 pm: Hmmmm . . . well, my trims are free . . . but I have never been really confident in being able to diagnose gait abnormalities. Sometimes I think I see things that are suspicious, but am never sure. We individual people all have our own way of moving, and I expect individual horses do, too . . . so outside of hopping or serious head-bobbing, I'm not really comfortable passing judgement.I may be in touch through Oakridge, first, Corinne, since I think they are straight south from us. Thanks.:-) |

Posted on Friday, Mar 16, 2007 - 9:42 am: Corrine,I can't seem to find any reference to the One Track program you spoke of. Do you know any more details...I am really interested in reviewing it. I may buy myself an early birthday gift if it is all you say it is. I have problems get a good farrier around here. Thanx so much for bringing these to our attention. I'm definitely getting both the glass horse DVD's (I'm a frustrated vet/physician). I'm the only person I know who goes through and colors, according to chosen code for consistency, the Horse Anatomy coloring work book and Greys Anatomy coloring work books for fun. (OK we all knew I was weird, now you have certain proof!) |

Posted on Friday, Mar 16, 2007 - 9:59 am: Ilona. I am off to a show this morning but I will leave a message at Oakridge to get more information. Perhaps there was subtitle you had to add to get it on google as I tried as well. I will have more information for you by the beginning of the week. And nice way to treat yourself? Isn't it funny that our Birthday and Christmas presents have now become presents for the horses. LOL. My mom tried to make a rule one year that a present had to be in the form of something I could use only for me but she saw how happy I was to get tack etc. This past year and has begun to shop at tack stores! LOL.Will be back in touch. Off to the show. Take care, Corinne |

Posted on Tuesday, Apr 17, 2007 - 8:30 pm: Sorry it took me so long to get back everyone. Saw the farrier today. I told him that I had mentioned the interactive CD ROMS on leg anatomy to everyone and about the one to help diagnose gait problems etc and Dr. O he was going to give me one of the extra promotional CD-ROM's for the One Trax program for me to send to you but didn't seem to have any with him so I will get it next trim in a month....free of charge obviously. He is just the type of farrier that is just pleased to share information, so Horses can get the best care and diganostics available. Much like everyone on this site. I can't wait to get it and look at it myself then I will have to get an address to send it to you. |

Posted on Thursday, Apr 19, 2007 - 11:43 am: I got a demo and the info on the on track system at AAEP in December. The demo CD is on the website. The site is www.ontrackequine.com .I was quite impressed with the potential. Makes some great prepurchase or maintenance records. ![]() |

Posted on Sunday, May 20, 2007 - 11:11 pm: PS. This is a CD Rom demo version that I believe has more capabilities than the large file you can down load. Once you get it you can compare. But at least with the web site...(Thanks Angel vet) everyone else can see a demo as well.Take care. |
