Our boarding stable has taken to spreading a whole huge round bale out around the pasture (about 10 horses). It has lasted quite a few days, and it rained the first day after the hay was put out (unsheltered, in big mounds). Is this safe? It seems as if the hay could spoil in the bottom layers. I don't know how many days it's supposed to last, but I don't see how the horses can eat it all within a safe number of days.

Whether it might spoil will depend on many factors including the humidity and temperature. If it becomes moldy it does represent a danger. Being rained on will leach the majority of nutrients out of it in which case it will be better than a snow ball but not much.
