I have read some discussions about the Uckele Hair Analysis tests. I am looking for any direction as to whether this is an accurate method of analyzing a problem. I have just received results from them for my recently purchased 11 year old mare that has the following problems/symptoms - swollen, inflamed udders; blood shot eyes beyond normal; broke out in hives from pasture last summer 3 times; carries weight well but seems to be very picky about her diet even though she eventually eats all of her grain and hay; has been bred in the past and did not catch. A cytology was done on the inflammed udder finding no suspicious cells. There is definately something going on with her (inflammation/immune system) and I am sure there are lots of ways to go at this, but was wondering if the hair analysis was success for anyone or is reliable. What other suggestions do you have? Results from hair analysis were high levels of Aluminum (8.5/1.5Normal), Lithium (0.018/0.008Normal), Iron (14.7/5.5Normal), Manganese (1.076/0.5Normal). Results that were low were Se, B, Ca, Mg, Na. Selenium is not a surprise because of where I live. Other results listed on report but these are the highlights. I will have a consultation with Uckele representative on this but want other feedback before I do so.

I have had a chance to look through various notes on topics related to my concern and found some helpful information especially in regards to high level of Al. I'll keep looking. This website is awesome!

Dear Dr. O, I haven't checked in, obviously, until now! Thanks for your inquiry. The readings from the analysis are in the units of Mg/100g. "Doc" is doing well, but has the same symptoms. I do have her on a special mix from Uckele. They say that 6 months to a year on the special mix. The goal is eventually to get her on a basic supplement when the Al and Se/E levels are within normal range. They did give me specifics about how long it takes to get the AL out of the body without using a supplement verses using a supplement. They also have case studies on how AL plays havoc with the horse's health. I decided to give this a try and am anxious to see how it plays out.
