Dr. O., Last Saturday, our whole barn got Strangles and Potomac vaccines. This week, the entire barn, well, those horses who have been ridden, is sore and stiff. Horses who are troupers are refusing jumps, some are so stiff they can't be ridden. Is this a mass reaction to a vaccine? If so, what can we do about it? I plan on calling my vet today also. Alicia

Dr. O., The article says it usually lasts 1 to 3 days. It has now been 9 days. Is this unusual? I would say my particular horse is lame or is having a problem with that mold I talked about, but the fact that out of the horses who are ridden in our barn, none are unaffected, makes me think it is something they all had, which was the vaccine. Typical mild vaccine reactions are commonly 1 to 3 days long, but as stated repeatedly in the article the strangles vaccine is not typical. Strangles has a much higher incidence of reactions and you can infer from this more severe reactions. A barn full of sore necks for 9 days is not typical even for Strangles vaccines, but it happens. Mold toxins do not typically cause stiffness but signs of liver and brain problems. DrO
