Hello, I would like to get your thoughts on my mare's particular situation. I live in the Northeast. My vet recently diagnosed my mare with muscle soreness and recommended a standard 1 tiny scoop/day selenium supplement of 1 ppm My barn feeds triple crown complete which contains .30 selenium but she only gets about a 1/2 scoop 2x day. They get ample hay equivalent to about a 1/2 bale daily. Would feeding the supplement even though the feed also has it in there do any harm. This is new information for me. The only other supplement she takes is B1. Thank you!

In order to evaluate this you need to be clearer about the weight of the supplement and feed fed daily and the concentration of the selenium in these feedstuffs. I also need to know the approximate weight of the horse and whether there is some reason to believe the hay may be deficient in selenium. You can actually do this all yourself Amy with the above information and the information in the article associated with this forum, Selenium in Horses. If after doing it all you would like to put your information and results in a post I would be delighted to review it. Why does your vet think he may be muscle sore? DrO

Thank you for your response Dr. I will look into this further and actually plan to call the vet for more clarification on Monday as I was not there for his visit. To answer your questions, she is about 1,000 lb 10 yr old TB Mare. She was experiencing back soreness and even when grooming was very sensitive to the touch which is not like her. The vet had done a chiropractic adjustment the previous week and was there any way to do other horses at the barn so I asked him to take a look further. I did some asking around and was told that our geographic area is deficient in selenium.
