I can't take the credit for this one . . . . a friend sent it to me yesterday. Maybe some of you have already tried it? With all the talk of vector borne diseases, it sounds like something worth trying.

Like to sit outdoors in summer, but those pesky mosquitoes drive you nuts? Well, here's a very simple and inexpensive solution that really works.

Get a white plate, put some water in it, and then add a couple of DrOps of LEMON Joy dishwashing soap. Then place the plate near where you'll be sitting outside. The mosquitoes will be attracted right to the plate, and will DrOp dead in the plate or nearby. How cheap and easy was that, and no yucky chemicals!

Have a mosquito-free summer!

Hey Holly--
Another version of this is to put lemon Joy into one of those dispensers you use to spray lawn chemicals or weed killers and mix with water (and I'm not sure on the ratio--but it should be pretty sudsy) and spray this mix all over the lawn, shrubs, etc. near where you spend time outdoors. I have heard the opposite--that mosquitos do not like the lemony fragrance (or soap or whatever) and will stay away. I have a hunch this info can be found pretty easily online SOMEWHERE...but according a friend who has actually done this, it really works.

so my question is.. does this solution kill the pests? or does it attract them away from us/horses..??

would this be a good thing to spray out in the pastures where the horses graze..???

Hey, back, Terri,
Wow. That was lots of info on the site. I wonder about the friend who sprays everything with soap and water, though . . . . She says it really works?

Actually, it's my ex-husband who does it. And he swears by it. I have been meaning to try it as I live in the mosquito capital of the world (across from a river and property bordered by marsh)--so if I get around to it this year....will let you know! There aren't many mosquitos in CO, are there?

Actually, Terri, there must have been quite a few as they had many more cases of WNV in CO than here in New England. I hope I miss most of mosquito season. At least, I don't think they have black flies which are just beginning to become a problem this time of year in Vermont.

Regarding mosquitos in Colorado: In my neigborhood there are no bodies of open water, just a creek that usually is dry during the summer. So, I find mosquitos to be less troublesome than in two other states I lived in - New Jersey and Missouri. However, if you live near water, or swampy or marshy areas, I believe you would also have more mosquitos.
