Posted on Sunday, May 25, 2003 - 9:46 pm: Hi all,Hopefully I am posting in the correct spot to get the most from this site and all our members and non-members. I have a dear friend taking her 28 year old mare up to Virginia to retire and spend her last years happy and fat. Once there I am sure she will live another 10. Its just getting her there that is worrisome. (and those who know me from past posts, I have that tendency). She is deteriorating living in a stall and since my friend has 50+acres up there she is going to move her there. The mare is not in the best of shape and has gone down a few times in the stall and we had a heck of a time getting her back up.(arthritis and all) She is a big girl Trakehner/warmblood mix... My friend has the vet coming out and doing what can be done to make the trip very comfortable. she is leaving on Friday May 30 and the trip is only 19-20 hours. She is hauling in a 3 horse slant load and she'll be the only horse in tow. She is driving up from Ft. lauderdale I-95 to Emporia Virginia, W on 58 To 15 N into keysville, Virginia. 1) I wanted to see if anyone on the board would be willing to be a Contact in case of emergency in your area and close to the route mentioned above. I know this is a lot to ask, and any help you can give would be great, ie. Vet numbers, Vet offices and directions from I-95. inns you have stayed at, places to stop and rest, or even your physical help if needed. 2) am hoping to setup a little list for her of places along the way that are horse friendly stopovers, etc. In case she needs it. And any veterinarian names and numbers along the way, etc. hence printing out this post to give her by Thursday May 29. 3) Any ideas you have regarding how to haul her so she won't go down. Or should the trailer be opened up as a giant box stall.. etc... If you have any experience in this please tell. I am afraid the mare might go down in mid drive and if this does happen I would hope that the list can get her the help she needs, or vet attention, etc. wherever she might be. I have the Horse travel guide book which i will give to her. I know you might advise to get a professional hauler but I don't think that is a possibility. Her husband will be with her so she isn't driving alone. So, what do you think? If you know of anything that is helpful Or if you can help, please pass it on... I want to be able to give her a really comprehensive list to cover anything that she might need. I am going to start on the puter now and map out and start searching too.... Oh if you don't want to post numbers and such in this forum you can email me personal... Thanks everyone.... jojo |

Posted on Tuesday, May 27, 2003 - 1:45 pm: Oh that is great Sharon. thanks.Actually Florida is the worst of it. There aren't any leads in the Travel guide except for parks and I have the Gainesville Hospital written up. I will email you now.... I had another question for all. If the horse goes down is it advisable to get it back up immediately? How long can they drive with the horse down. Not in pain or uncomfortable but just like she is laying down... Anyone have thoughts on this? jojo |
