I just finished my round of spring shots with the local vet and he questioned, did I want to vaccinate my older horse? I have never thought about this before, i just figured that they all need to be vaccinated forever... What he said was that at her age (20) she has built up enough of an immunity? to the vaccines and I guess her age will start to work against her as the years go on where it might not be a benefit to vaccinate and worry about side effects. I got the impression that I really don't need to vaccinate her as she ages... Or did I just not hear him correctly What is your take on this? Do you vaccinate the older horse or not? And which ones? Or is there one in particular I shouldn't do any longer. Usually i just do east and west nile, tetanus, rabies and strangles Dr. O I have to ask, (but don't laugh). While the horse was given the strangles nasally, she flipped her head and some of the serum got into my eye... I laughed it off with the vet, but really, could a person contract something by coming into contact with a vaccine? Maybe i am just confused but isn't a vaccine a live form of the virus? thanks jojo

I know of no reasons not to follow the recommendations in the article on Overview of Vaccines JoJo no matter what the age. I would be interested in any information your vet has to the contrary. Not all vaccines are alive, but the intranasal Strangles is one of them. Yes there is a tiny concern but no one as yet as reported a problem and I guarantee thousands have been exposed, I am evertime I vaccinate these guys and they snort. It is important to rememver humans do not normally contract this organism when it is healthy the vaccine is a weakened form. But that is not the same as saying a infection is impossible. DrO
