Good morning Dr. O., My vet decided not to give my new 2 year old the w nile vaccine, citing reported problems with it, especially the booster. She said the problems were more in earlier years, not so much in the past year or two. I haven't heard anything about problems specific to this vaccine. Have there been formal reports of reactions? (I'm wondering if the real problem is with the clinic she works for, since its owner would prefer no farm calls.) If there hasn't been a high incidence of reactions, I will vaccinate her myself if necessary.

Welcome Mary, What problems does your veterinarian perceive? We have specific information on this vaccine in the article Diseases of Horses » Nervous System » Incoordination, Weakness, Spasticity, Tremors » West Nile Virus. DrO

Any horse could have a reaction to any vaccine that could cause anaphylaxis, just like children, and yes it could be fatal. The majority of horses only have mild reactions, if any. I, personally, would take the chance and give my horse the vaccine. I say this, because, I have seen 24 horses who contracted WNV a few years ago in California. The only horses that lived (5) out of the 24 had been vaccinated for WNV. Only one horse out of the five that lived, had neurological problems after recovery (and he only had 1 WN vaccine at start up, not the recommended follow up injection 3-6 weeks after the initial shot). If you have a heavy mosquito population in your area, I would recommend that you seriously think about giving the injection yourself, if your Vet doesn't want to do it.
