Hello Dr. O and all,

I've recently purchased two bred mares, 10 and 21, due to foal in the next month to month and a half. Neither of these mares has any vaccination or worming history. I've had bloodwork and a fecal done on the 21 yr old and she came back healthy other than worm eggs in the fecal. I've read through the articles on worming for pregnant mares as well as worming debilitated horses.

It's been suggested by my vet that I start with a bendazole power pac to be given over 5 days as a start to a worming program which I can only find in a paste form. My challenge is that the 10 yr old mare is not halter broke and, at this point, I don't have the facilities on my place to catch her easily to paste worm her. Halter breaking is my main objective with her right now but I'd like to get her wormed asap.

I found a product made by Safe guard called Equi-bits (0.5% fenbendazole) which is a pelleted one dose wormer. I'm not familiar with this wormer so would like anyone's opinion. Could this be given safely in a full dose? Or in a half dose then 7 days later a full dose?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Check to be sure there are no label warnings against use in pregnant mares Sara, or even better that it is approved for use in pregnant mares and if it is go ahead. I do not know of any risks involved with the product. If she is in good shape I would go ahead with a full dose and then consider the pelleted ivermectin product a few weeks later and until you can get her on a regular pasting program.

Thanks, Dr. O. I was looking at the Equi-bits specifically because the label says "safe for pregnant mares." She's in great shape which is going to make halter breaking even more difficult! I'll definitely look into the pelleted ivermectin for future use. Thanks again, I appreciate the response and all the great information your site provides!

One more question, Dr. O. I'd like to order an ivermectin pelleted wormer at the same time I order the Equi-bits but I'm having trouble finding an ivermectin pellet. I find several pyrantel tartrates and pyrantel pamoates, however. From reading your articles it appears that all three are types of anthelmintics. Would one of the pyrantels be a suitable alternative as a follow up to the fenbendazole or is there an ivermectin pelleted wormer that you recommend?

Thanks again.

Ivermectin would be preferable but I do not have a brand I would recommend.

Thanks again, Dr. O. I'll keep looking but I may have to go with the Pyrantel since I don't seem to be having any luck. Anybody else out there ever used or heard of an ivermectin pellet?

I guess I'll just have to get to work on halter breaking!

Margy! That's it! I searched through Country Supply but guess I missed it because my search was narrowed to pellets. Thank you SO much!
