I couldn't find anywhere else in the Site Map or Search Site for help with this. I am looking for other horsemen's opinions on fly control or fly sprays approved for pregnant or lactating mares. On open pastures with run-in sheds that are cleaned 3 times a week, we have 9 mares with and in foal. I am trying to increase the cleaning schedule but I know that it takes more than clean-up. The flys and mosquitos here in MN are horrible and I read in Equus that the stomping that horses do during the fly season can actually cause problems for the legs and backs of horses. These poor mares and babies are so miserable during the evenings and sometimes all day. I know that there are sprays that we can wipe the foals with but I am wondering if anyone has any GREAT experience with a certain product for the mares. Can anyone help me?

I use Warpaint on my mares and foals here in Texas. I have not found anything to contraindicate its use in pregnant/lactating mares and newborn foals and it works great. I only have to apply it once every couple of weeks.

Good Luck!

Hello Tara Amarine,
Fly sheets while on pasture and housing during the worse parts of the day are safe for all horses and more effective than sprays. Note that usually days are worse than nights because the large biting flies are day time creatures.
