HI Dr. O - haven't posted in awhile - but didn't see anything that would cause me to be concerned about this - but figured I'd ask to be certain. I just got some wonderful looking orchard grass hay but it has some wheat in it. I understand that the hay field at one time had wheat planted in it. Is it a problem to feed it to my horse? It is very dry and really looks like straw with the wheat head on it...not alot but some stalks throughout a bale. Thanks. Karen

Hello Karen,
The concern is that a lot of really toxic molds can occasionally occur in the wheat heads, fortunately unlike the corn molds some are quite visible. As long as the wheat heads look healthy, no funny growths or moldiness, you have a excellent but not perfect chance of being OK. If my hedging scares you, I would say the same about any foodstuff: I cannot guaratee it's safety.
