My 15-month-old colt and 18-year-old mare were put in their stalls tonight 30 minutes before I arrived in the evening. The colt was quite sweaty on his neck and slightly less so on his hindquarters. He was warm but not hot inside his back legs. His mother was less sweaty and hot but was still slightly wet on her hindquarters. She was not hot inside her back legs.
I was told they had been running because of bugs, but I don't think the barn owner would have let them run too long. (She didn't say how long)

I don't know their temps when they were brought in, but when I got there, they were fine--just hot.

Would colic or founder be a possible consquence in such circumstances?
Should the barn people have hosed the horses down or at least turned on the fans as a precaution?

I think running makes perfect sense and did not neccesarily need special treatment. They can cool down perfectly well on their own if the barn is not uncomfortably hot.
