Hi All, We are getting another horse (mare). You know the old saying "the # of horses owned increases to the size of your barn", LOL. But seriously, is there such a thing (Breeding Soundness Exam)? Can it part of a pre-purchase exam? What is done to a mare in a Breeding Soundness Exam, ie: ultrasound, bloodwork etc (so I know what to ask & what to look for). Thank you!!

i bought a mare a couple of years ago, we had a prepurchase exam done at UCD...in that exam was a breeding soundness part too... they scoped her to see if she had ever had a foal and to look for any thing adnomal cysts etc... they even let me look thru the scope.. that was interesting... i bred her the next year.. all was fine..she was a maiden mare and took the first time.! good luck... Yes a reproductive exam can be done on a horse being bought to possibly breed. And like a prepurchase exam it can vary tremendously depending on the time of the year, history of the mare, your goals, and resources. A minimum would be- a general physical exam including lameness evaluation
- a careful reprodutive history
- examination of the external genitalia
- speculum exam of vagina and cervix
- manual exploration of the cervix for patency and scars
- cytology (if previously bred)
- transrectal palpation and ultrasound for normal structures
In general a mare with no history of problems, a normal basic repro exam, and known to cycle well would be unlikely to have abnormalities that show up on further procedures. But a history of problems, older mare, or abnormal findings on the initial exam might direct you to also include: - culture of the endometrium
- endoscopy of the uterus
- endometrial biopsy
- sequential rectal and ultrasound examination to confirm normal reproductive physiological events through one whole cycle
- reproductive hormone studies
