My 7 yr. old Hannovarian appears to be increasingly sensitive to vaccines. His last series (EEE and West Niles booster) caused swelling in his neck about the size of a large cantelope and took 3 weeks to subside. He was given one vaccine on one side of his neck and one on the other, along with a dose of Banamine in an effort to avoid the sensitivity. A previous series of shots given in his hip caused swelling which travelled down his leg. Do you have any advice on what we should do this fall? Would spreading out the vaccines over a period of time help? It was also suggested that we try giving them in his chest (!). I'm very concerned. Many thanks!

Hello again . . . spent the day at Michigan State's Veterinary clinic with a few horses and a couple of different matters (I will posting in other areas as well!) While we believe the EEE vaccine caused the latest reaction, Fuji appears to react each time we vaccinate and more severely each time. Dr. Stick at MSU suggested that we eliminate vaccines altogether as is may not be worth the risk. Another doctor suggested DrOpping all but the essential and life-threatening. We currently horse show in the Midwest and I am contemplating a month in Florida with him in February. I am also concerned about the health of other horses in our barn living with a horse not vaccinated. What do you think?

EEE is a serious problem. If the people who have actually seen the reaction think it is not worth the risk, then you should follow their advice. But without this protection I would not take him to where mosquitoes and EEE are prevalent. DrO

My mare again reacted to either EEE or West Nile. She is stiff and sore, and her neck has a large swelling about the size of a loaf of bread on it. I gave her the vaccines, one in either side of her neck, a week ago, and the symptoms started showing up about 3 days after, and are still there. I am giving her bute. Anything else I can do? This happens every time, but I figure it is better than her being dead!! Alicia

Alicia, it is not clear from your post how you are using the bute. See if you are following our guidlines in » Care for Horses » Vaccines & Coggin's Test » Vaccines and Adverse Reactions. DrO

I am giving her 1 twice a day. I gave her 2 twice a day the first day I noticed the reaction. This seems consistant with the article. It doesn't say how long the reactions usually take to go away, however. We are on the 8th day now, but I haven't seen her today. Alicia

The article says for horses that have known reactions to start the bute before the reaction, it will usually short circuit the whole problem. Read it more carefully again. DrO

I guess I always hope she won't react! I will just have to assume it is going to happen from now on. Thanks!
