Got rid of cannon crud in one go by using dandruff shampoo as recommended by Dr. O (but with a different "active ingredient") AND scrubbed with one of those 3M green/yellow sponge/plastic scrubber. Used the yellow side for suds and the green side to really get the oily dirt out. It may do a number on the hair but I did not notice any damage and have not had any recurrence for months.

If I am dealing with not too delicate leather, for instance, a lead shank, the green scrubber is great at the castile or Murphy's oil soap stage if you follow up with lots of good "moisturizer," my usual old-fashioned choice pure neatsfoot oil. I would not use scrubber on a saddle except maybe girth billets.
