Hi Dr.O, I recently purchased 7yr.old Holsteiner mare, and noticed on her blood panel that her phosphorous was 0.8. Her CA/PO4 was 15.3. Discussed this with my vet and he was not at all concerned. Any thoughts? Thanks, Molly

No this is fine here Molly.

Most lab values always need to be interpreted in light of clinical findings and all other lab values and this is true of phosphorous. Low phosphorous in the blood (hypophosphatemia) has been associated with a number of diseases:
  • kidney disease
  • hypoparathyroidism
  • nutritional imbalance of calcium and phosphorous
  • malignant cancer
  • acidemia (acidic blood)
However I frequently get low phosphorous values in otherwise healthy horses. You really need to address this question to someone who has examined the horse and the rest of the lab results. Perhaps she has had experiences with this lab and finds this a frequent result from them.
