Our 5 month old filly was diagnosed with physitis this week, although there is no heat or lameness associated with the swollen knees and ankles. Our vet recommended reducing the protein in her feed to 12%. We are making changes to better balance the feed by switching to 3/4 grass hay (our alfalfa/grass mix was 20%)and giving her oats and 10% sweet mix instead of the Omolene 200 she's been eating. How soon should I look for reduction in the swelling?

Thanks.

Perhaps you should start with the article on physitis see, » Equine Diseases » Lameness » Diseases of Joints » Epiphysitis, Physitis, and Physeal Dysplasia. In general these type swellings don't go down but usually the horse "grows in to them".
