Posted on Monday, May 21, 2007 - 4:21 pm: Due to my own ineptness, I made a mistake in administering the West Nile modified live vaccine (PreveNile) to my seven horses. I was ok reconstituting for the first four, but I had some interruptions as I was completing the process with he last three. As I was preparing to reconstitute the dose for the last horse I realised I had an extra vial of the dessicated vaccine, which meant that I had injected one horse with the diluent only. I just don't know which of the two it was. I want to re-vaccinate both horses to be safe, but I'm not sure that would be ok for the one who would be getting the second dose. The product description states that in an overdose study, 10X the dose evinced no clinical signs, so, I'm assuming that it would be alright. What do you think, Dr. O? |

There may be slight increased risk of reaction but not much and by studying the article on reactions you can be prepared. If you are extra cautious a pre-dose of flunixin might alleviate any risk, but I would probably not do that personally. Let us know what you decide and how it turns out.DrO |

Posted on Thursday, Aug 23, 2012 - 9:26 am: Dr. O - With West Nile spreading, will it harm my horses to give another vaccination. The first was in May, this second one will be September. We have standing water and we have birds roosting in the barn. Also can encephalitis shots be redone at the same time? Thank you. |

You will get more responses if you start your own discussion rather than post at the bottom of another member's discussion. Each discussion is "owned" by the original poster and all replies in that discussion should either directly or indirectly address the concerns of the original poster. To start your own discussion back up one page using the navigation bar at the top of this page. This will be a Article Page on this topic. Below the article you will find a list of already existing discussions on this topic. Under this list you will find the "Start New Discussion" button. This is a good topic on your subject so you should first review the article as it will have important information on your subject. Next check the titles of the already existing discussions to see if your question has already been answered. If your question remains unanswered, now is the time to Start a New Discussion. Select a short title that describes your specific concern. A title like "Help!!!" does not help others find your specific topic. Instead something like "Ace for Colic?" allows others to rapidly find and understand what your topic is about just by viewing the title. This is likely to bring more responses from those with some experience with your topic and allows members to find answers to their questions quicker. |
