Has anyone ever constructed or purchased a portable loading ramp for a step-up loading trailer? We've recently acquired a beautiful mare who has had surgery for a broken leg. She healed poorly and is left quite compromised, but seems to be comfortable and happy in her new home. We worry about having to transport her to the vet for emergencies. We have a step-up trailer and love it. Any suggestions on how we can accomodate this mare for loading and unloading without having to purchase a new trailer? A wooden one would seem to be too heavy for one person to manage. We wouldn't want it too narrow for fear of her misstepping and falling off. I was hoping maybe someone makes a nice strong aluminum ramp premade. Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards to everyone, Diane

My first two horse trailer was a step-up. It had two wooden ramps reinforced with metal that stored in the saddle compartment. On one end of each ramp were two welded hangers that slipped into four brackets welded to the trailer frame, just under each stall in the back. When in place, these ramps formed a solid and sturdy walk-in for the horses. True, they were heavy, but not so heavy that I couldn't manage them. I've been sorry that I let those ramps go with the trailer when I sold it, ever since. I can't count the times I could have used them since then......THEN being 1976......when I was ummm...err...TEN!!!Yeah..TEN...got my license early, I did, yeah...

Elizabeth, that sounds just like what I need. I've been looking at loading ramps on the net and I found some made of aluminum that fold up. Seems they're made for motorcycles. Only problem is there are wide gaps and it's really just a frame. And they're expensive! I was just hoping some horse trailer outfit sold them as an option and I could find the name of the company. Many thanks for your response. Ten years old! You go, girl!!!! ;-)
