Hi
I am thinking of getting old macs for my barefoot horse. He has never needed anything before , but with all this rain his feet have become more tender. My question is Does anyone feel the boot is hard to get on or to tight after 6 weeks of growth. I mean do they really fit properly between trimmings. Also what would be the average growth length and width wise after 4 weeks. Just an average I know each horse is different.
Thanks for any thoughts

The Old Mac is very easy to put on. I trim my horses every 6 weeks and have had no fitting problem with the boots. It's better to buy them slightly larger , but never smaller. I go with the largest measurement of the hoof and get the boot that matches it. My Arabian mare has very small feet and right after trimming the boots are a little big on her. I just cut the toes off some old thick socks and put those on her before I put the boots on her. We have had no problems. In fact, I accidently got size 8 boots for my SWH (when he should have had size 4) and he never lost a boot out on the trail! I couldn't believe it! They stay on really well.

Yes I too find Old Macs easy to put on and fit well throughout the trimming cycle. I do find they are hard to get measured for properly using the system they have. Unlike Nancy I found the largest measurement frequently too large (we have put them on five horses). Unfortunatley I do not know how to tell you which will work when but we had better luck with the size smaller than the chart recommends. Hmmm.... There may be a reason for our differences now that I think about it.

Dealing with T. Walking Horses they tend to have long feet. Perhaps the perverse idea that normal feet are wider than they are longer, and having horses with feet extra long causes the problem. But we did find a Paso with perfect feet that did better in the 4 rather than the 5 the chart suggested. Run a search on Old Macs for more on this.

Katrina - I was told to put the foot on a piece of cardboard and cut out the foot shape - make sure to cut right under the edge and get a true size - then take that to the store and fit it inside the boots to find the closest fit! Do this on both feet as they are probably different. Good luck

Thanks DR O ,Nancy and Janet,
My horse's front feet are wider than longer, so I will start with the measurements they recomend. Unfortunatly I have to order them over the internet. I might trace his foot and send it with my order.
thanks everyone.
