Dear Dr. O, Hello,I'm a new subscriber from South Fla.(near Palm Beach) and have been looking, unsuccessfully, for a deworming schedule tailored to our seasons (or lack thereof). All of the published schedules I've seen (Rotation, for example)are predicated on traditional seasons. Here there is no freeze, only hot and hotter. Is this a concern or is it OK to follow the same schedule that horses in, say, the mid-atlantic states follow? I just moved to my own 5 acre place 4 weeks ago, and have 3 horses (a quarter, a mini, and a pony) It was sort of a low risk environment until the pony came here yesterday (from a large boarding stable), but he looks healthy. Only my quarter horse is on Strongid 2x daily wormer- the mini won't eat it.(sort of concerns me- since we moved he won't eat the pellets he used to like even when I put molassas on-so supplements are impossible to feed) I'd like to start the pony on daily also but I think I must use a larvacide first. I'm sort of at a loss and want to get a handle on this...I did a search and didn't find any info on Fla. worming.I do plan to start by having my vet take worm counts from all three horses. Also of concern to me is how much do I have to know about the past worming of these horses? (Ditto for vaccines but that's another discussion forum!) Any info would be much appreciated. -Beth Gordon, Lake Worth, Fla.

You can follow the recommendations in the article Beth, just be sure you follow your success with regular fecal counts. While it is good to know what sort of parasite burden the horses have when you start it is not essential, just give the pony the larvacide. DrO
