We know two different people who are feeding stabilized, fortified rice bran free choice to their horses. These horses include colts, breeding stallions and mares, and riding horses. They feed rice bran only on pasture during spring, summer and fall, and in winter they put out a protein tub approved for horses. They don't fee any additional hay. They have been doing this for several years. I talked with their farrier and he said all the horses look good and definitely have very good hooves. I don't know about any vitamin/mineral supplements that may be added. Would sure appreciate your opinion. Thanks, Jack

What exactly does this bran contain, Jack? Stabilized and fortified are too general terms. Does it contain the germs or other parts of the seed? Is it improved with other ingredients? Rice hulls are relatively good for bedding, and it is my feeling that well fed horses shouldn't normally touch it.

There is too little information here Jack for any meaningful commentary. Much depends on the nutritional profile of the bran, which can vary considerably, how it is fortified, and what other supplements and feeds are given. But most important is the quality of the pastures. DrO
