Would oats soaked for a couple of days be off for feeding horses with it ?
What changes would the grain undergo after 48 hours? Does fermentation start so early?

Christos,

Water has bacteria in it, so fermentation will definitely be a concern depending on the temperature and length of time the oats are soaked. Why do you need to soak them for two days? How 'bout if you just put hot water on them to start, and let them soak for an hour instead?

It's a long story to explain, Holly,
It is about an attempt to bring back to life three abandoned horses. I use to soak their morning oats overnight and their evening meal during the day. But they are far in the mountains and the gang that initially joined to their rescue got bored with it, so now sometimes it can be 48 hours that I don't visit them, and the oats is left soaking.
I can just throw the oversoaked oats away and spend a little more time with them that day, it is not a big expense since it does not happen often, I am just curious to know if it is safe or not after 48 hours soaking.

I would be a little nervous. The beet pulp I soak starts to smell sweet after 24 hours, so I dont use it after 24 hours. I dont know about oats though.

As Holly states this is very dependent on temperature, the warmer the quicker. I too would suggest you avoid the practice.
