Many of you may already do this. A friend of mine who is a small animal vet taught me this. Before you give an injection grab a section of the skin and pinch it and hold for a few seconds right in front of where you are going to give the injection. Hold skin while you inject the needle. The horse pays more attention to the pinch (they get used to it and just stand there) than the needle prick in his neck and does not flinch when you inject the needle. Once the needle is in let go of the pinch asperate(for IM injection) and inject as normal. I had to give my horse 40 CC's a day for a week like this and would have never made it through otherwise! He got so he would not even pay attention to the pinch. You can kind of conceal the syringe behind your arm so he doesn't even know you are up to something!

Years ago, when everyone slapped the injection site to desensitize, I came up with scratching the area with my fingernails. I do this for 10 or 15 seconds. It doesn't startle the horse like slapping the area did. I very seldom have any, even babies, react to injections this way. I take the needle and pop it in without the syringe attached to make sure no blood comes out. I also let pen or any large shot warm up some before injecting. That seems to help also. This has worked for years for me. EO
