Does gelatin strengthen the hoof? I read an article that stated as an aside, that clinical trials have demonstated gelatin doesn't work, but could not find any further information. The same article reported on a study that proved horses hooves in the study improved using Farrier's Formula, but Farrier's Formula contains gelatin. Also, with diseases being transmitted by feeding herbivores animal products, is it a good idea to feed gelatin since it is made of animal bones and tendons? Dr. O, can you expound on this? Thanks.

We think it is the biotin and methionine in the farriers formula that is providing the benefit for more on this see Care for Horses » Hoof Care » Care of the Hoof: an Overview. I too have seen reports that gelatin was not beneficial for improving horn. DrO

Hello Letizia, In addition to reading Dr.O's wonderful article, you can also go to www.lifedatalabs.com. This is the web site for "Farriers Formula". There, you can read for yourself all of the ingredients of this product. I am a satisfied customer of this product. Hope this helps. Susan B.

Laetitia, It is an old belief that feeding powdered gelatin will improve a horse's hooves. A couple of old "traditional" farriers still recommend it in our area. In the racetrack they've told me that gelatin is in modern hoof formulas just because owners are stuck with this false tradition.
