I just bought a piece of land and it has established pasture. I had a person from the AG department come out today to take a look to see what all is growing there. He said we had the following:
Johnson, bermuda, bahia, dallas and some winter fescue. He said the fescue is not a problem if I don't have a pregnant mare. The other horses should be fine. he could not find any white clover (original owner said it has a lot) and said even if there was some white clover it would never be enough to cause a problem.
I never heard of bahia grass either.

Any input or warnings about these kind of grasses?

Thanks

The Johnsongrass is problematic, see Equine Diseases » Poisons , Venoms & Poisonous Plants » Poisons, Poisonous Plants, and Venemous Animals. The best reference is on the Indiana link.

Hello DrO,
on the same topic as Monica's question, is there a website somewhere that lists common pasture grasses with pictures, for those of us that have a problem telling the difference between differnt grasses? This would also help for evaluating hay, I guess....

Thanks much!

OOps!!!! Never Mind my earlier question! I just realized I looked in the wrong section. I should have KNOWN that I would find this answer on "The Advisor" and indeed, just what I was looking for is under:
"Planning and planting new Pasture".
I must say that the better I get to know this site, the more I am impressed with the comprehensiveness and quality of information you have compiled for us. This subscription has turned out to be one of the best and most enjoyable investments I have made for my education and my goal of one day becoming a knowledgeable "horse-woman"!
