I attended a seminar last night put on by a vet with regards to lameness. One of the comments made by somenone last night was that a lot of the problems that are being seen today in horses are coming from shoeing a horse too young. That the bones in the foot of a two year old are not fully formed and that putting a shoe on the hoof at this young age inhibits the formation of the bones in the hoof. Just interested in other opinons and yours from a vet point of view Dr. O.
Thanks

Janet,
I strongly believe that a two yeard old horse should never work hard enough to wear his hooves to the extend of needing shoes.
I have seen, however, several 2yo horses training hard in steel plates, and never heard of any problems with the development of their hooves because of the shoes.

There is no scientiic work or clinical studies to suggest this is so as long as the shoes are fitted correctly and changed regularly. Also this does not jive with my own personal experience. Improper or too infrequent trimming are the causes of chronic foot problems starting in young horses.
