A raion balancer lists selenium at 3.5ppm. The feed analysis is per pound. The recommended feeding is 2 lb.day.

Would this put the Se in a high range if there are other source of selenium in the diet? I never can figure out the ppm mg/kg...I assume you would convert 3.5 ppm to mg/kg then convert to mg/lb then double it?

Hello Leah,
this is not an excessive amount by itself but without knowing the other amounts of Selenium in the diet we cannot know if you are feeding too much.

The critical part of figuring what is going on is to realize that ppm is not an amount but a concentration. As such you can work the whole problem in metric which is recommended because of the nice and easy conversion of:
1 ppm = 1 mg/kg

This calculation and recommended levels of selenium are explained further in the article Care for Horses » Nutrition » Selenium in Horses.
