My 8-year old gelding has been very stinky the past few days and I found the stink was coming from his sheath. The sheath has an unusually high amount of gooey stuff around it, as well as accompanying knats, and he's sensitive when I touch anywhere from the girthline back. He's never had stink or issues like this in the 3-years I've had him. He had a small bean about 2-years ago that fell-out on it's own, and I brush any crusty stuff off when he's relaxed. Is this something that I should be concerned with? Is there anything I can do? I can't tell if it's swollen compared to normal, but I think it might be bothering him.

Definitely sounds like something is going on - perhaps an infection or injury. If it were me, I'd have my vet take a look.

You're right, I did put a call into my vet this morning. I wonder if I should make it more urgent???

Humans of the male variety get something called balanitis. It is a fungal, bacterial or mixed infection of the penile skin and foreskin more common in the uncircumcised. I wonder if this is the equine equivalent? Is the penis or sheath swollen? Urinating normally? Keeping his member up and away, or letting it hang? Any fever? I am always learning something new on HA cp, hope this is cleared up quickly and without complication. Stacy

Concerning urgency, I think you ought to have this examined and cleaned in the next few days. For a thorough examination the vet will probably sedate with acepromazine for a really good exam of all the parts of the penis and sheath. In the meantime can you clean the sheath thoroughly. Perhaps he can give you a sedative to help until he gets out if it is going to be awhile. DrO

Thank you, I'll see what I can do until the vet can make it out.

Just talked to my vet and he said he's seen a couple dozen of these cases in the last few weeks because of the high humidity and something sibera or cibera?? Anyway, I will be letting him do a thorough cleaning. Thanks all!

Turns out he had a couple beans stuck in there! I went ahead and had both the boys cleaned--to my surprise the young horse had a huge accumulation of gunk, so I'm glad they both got done. Also had a mole removed from young horse while he was sedated. From now on I'm just going to have them both cleaned when we do spring shots. Thank you for the advice on getting it taken care of!

Glad it turned out to be something so simple. All geldings/stallions are different. Some hardly accumulate smegma at all, and others have a bunch of it. Take care! Suzy

Thanks Suzy! I do think there was something going on for a few days there, but it worked itself out.
