I know lots of you have little house dogs, cats, and small children that visit the barn. So I thought I'd share this. Yesterday I did something I feel just awful about. Our hay barn is full right now. In order to get hay down I have to throw it at an awkward angle over the stall wall. I didn't get the hay over the wall, instead it went down the steps and landed on my Jack Russell Terrier, Taz. Taz yelped a few times and ran off & I finished feeding. I figured if he was running, nothing was broken. I've checked him over a few times since and can't find any specific area that is hurt but he's been moving rather slow and stiff as well has holding up one front leg. I think his shoulders got the worst of it. Poor thing, he's been just standing and looking at me, ears down, eyes so sad. I've been carrying him in his kennel down the stairs as he seems sorest going down, but is o.k. going up. He's eating and drinking o.k., so I think we are lucky and no serious damage was done. The bale landed on some truck parts and not flat on Taz, so that was good. So, please everyone, remember to watch where your small critters are, and you kids too! I keep Taz in the house when ever I ride but didn't think anything of it when I feed or clean stalls. |

Angie if his Range of Motion isn't improving and he still isn't fully bearing weight by now I would take him in for films just to be sure. You know how my dog Robbie has separation anxiety? One time I DrOve all the way home and the barn manager called asking if I forgot something I was like nope I have my wallet, my cell phone....OH no.....I forgot my dog. When I DrOve back down the dirt road to the farm he was sitting in the driveway looking all dejected waiting for me poor thing. I still feel bad about that one. Hope he feels better! Get well soon Taz...you sure are cute! |

I've made a habit of pushing off some loose hay and yelling "watch out!" before I knock down the bales. The animals all know to run.Taz is precious, Angie. Sure hope he is o.k. Our little dog, Pogo, always wants to follow me around and "help." It's always a concern. |

The Hay gods were kind at the last second they ran one way and bale bounced other way ! All I could picture were 5 little smashed furpersons so I know how you feel! Taz is beyond cute hope he is four footed soon . cindy |

Posted on Saturday, Jul 28, 2007 - 6:50 pm: Thanks everyone. I've had the 5 kittens to watch out for too. Only they were in the hay barn and I was trying not to trip over them or throw them down with the hay!Corinne, Taz did come out with me 3 times for potty breaks and did some trotting around. But just a few minutes ago he yelped over on the other side of the living room where Kaylee is watching tv. I can see her from here and know she didn't move off the couch, so he just moved wrong. He's trembling right now which is what he does when he's stressed. (why I don't board him at kennels; he comes home stinky from stress, and sheds hair like crazy) His one shoulder feels warm to me. I checked his ribs too and they don't seem painful. I imagine he feels like we do the day after we get bucked off a horse. Heck, it hurts worse the next day, and sometimes worse yet the following day. I really think he will be o.k., don't worry, he's had massages today, slept on the bed last night, has a ramp to use to go outside. Was thinking of sitting with him with an ice pack on the shoulder. Anyone know how much Tylenol a dog his size can have? Seems to me the vet said I could give that after he was neutured. That was 6 years ago. I thought about giving him some if he seemed to be in more pain as time goes on. I do yell "heads up" or "look out"...didn't know he was in the barn. Or that the bale would overpower me, lol! |

I always worry I'm one day going to go over the edge with one of the heavy ones!I suspect Taz will be o.k., but if he isn't by Monday maybe you should get him checked. Is his name short for Tazmanian Devil by any chance? |

Posted on Saturday, Jul 28, 2007 - 10:25 pm: Angie, Tylenol is toxic to dogs (and cats). Asprin is ok.Margy |

Posted on Saturday, Jul 28, 2007 - 11:11 pm: Margy,That is interesting as I am SURE the vet told me Tylenol! O.K., so it was 6 years ago. I didn't give him any then and won't now either. I remember thinking it was weird. I don't think it was Aspirin because we always have baby aspirin in the house...just don't sound right. I'll have to give this vet a call!!! She had just got started locally, and has the boarding that Taz hates...she has crushed gravel for the runs! Hey, thanks. I wouldn't give anything without a vets approval unless I am 100% fersure it's o.k. Especially when it comes to my "baby". Yup, just like that little devil Sara! I think he talked to the horses...had my hands full with Cody tonight, he was snotty I thought. And Gem who's been coming along quite nicely, went into a bucking spree on the lunge line and I thought she had an attitude too under saddle! Think they were all out to get me for hurting Taz, lol!! |

Posted on Sunday, Jul 29, 2007 - 9:12 am: Taz seems more like himself today. Ears up, a more "happy" expression. He's still sore though.I am always amazed that some people can call animals "dumb". Taz slept on the bed again last night, like he always does when Brian works nights. This morning he whined a few times and stood at the top of the stairs and patiently waited for me to bring the kennel up for his elevator ride down. Yesterday, I had to coax him in there, today he went right in and laid down. I hope I don't stumble and DrOp him during these trips down! "Going down, 1st floor please"...LOL! He wanted to go down the 2 steps off the back door, but I could see he was worried so I tugged his collar and he walked/slipped down the little ramp just fine. These critters sure touch our hearts. All the times I've told him to lay down and quit racing around; now I can't wait to see him racing all over the house and yard. Or doing his "boing, boing" jump straight up that JRT's do so well! |

Posted on Tuesday, Jul 31, 2007 - 8:21 am: Glad Taz seems to be healing. He sounds like my boy Robbie when he would see Herb leave for work he would literally knock on the door to come up on the bed knowing Dad doesn't allow that....now they are so conditioned they sit there waiting every morning and if Herb sleeps late they whimper like he has somehow put a kink in their plans to get up on the bed in the morning.Anyway, Sorry I haven't written in a few days. I haven't gotten any HA emails as I inadvertently hit the system recovery button when my computer was acting up....bad bad bad very bad. We lost everything we have ever loaded on this computer and of course can't find the disks to reload office which I need the most. |

Posted on Tuesday, Jul 31, 2007 - 8:56 am: Corinne,Taz is doing better every day. Yesterday I wish he knew voice commands for his gaits, LOL!! "walk....no trot, no canter" or whatever you call a dogs gaits. He's limping and very sensitive to anyone being close to him. He came down the stairs quicker this morning. Now, as soon as he gets over the "ouch, you're going hurt me, don't touch" problem, he is getting a nice long bath! At this point more afraid he's going to re-injury himself than anything. Ohhh...I hate that with computers. I have so many important pictures on here, like of you, and I never think to put them on disks. Now that is bad, bad, bad! |
