I have trimmed my horses for several years without ever trimming the sole, originally because I didn't have the proper tool, then because it never seemed to have a adverse affect. Some people feel I am doiing my horses a disservice and am just liucky they have never gone lame. I have done gymkhana, trailed many miles, some jumping. Am I lucky or on to something? Thanks for your input.

Several natural trimming techniques, Redden's four point technique comes to mind, suggest you never touch the soles when trimming. DrO

Hello, I agree with Dr. O. My husband shoes our horses and never trims the sole unless they are shedding it, then he only takes off that which is being shed. He also doesn't trim down the frog. The reason being, the old sole protects the foot plain and simple. This is why we are able to ride our horses right after shoeing when people who have the soles and frog trimmed down cannot. Their horses are "ouchy" from not having that extra protection. So don't listen to your barn mates; they're the ones doing their horses a disservice. Unless they injure themselves, our horses do not go lame or get foot sore and we put a lot of miles on those feet! Happy trails, Holly
